Is Modern View the only reporting option in QuickBooks Online now, and how do I make it work better for me?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't feel that the new "modern reporting view" is helpful at all.  It seems much harder to drill down to what I'm looking for.  Is there a way to turn that option off so it defaults to the classic view?

There's no way to turn off Modern View or set Classic View as a default today. Classic View has been fully retired in QuickBooks Online, and every report, standard or custom, now opens in Modern View.

Make Modern View work the way you need

  1. Open the report you want to adjust.
  2. Select Customize to open the customization panel.
  3. Adjust the columns shown, remove ones you don't need, and reorder or resize columns so key data isn't pushed off to the side.
  4. Use the available filters (accounts, customers, classes, locations, and more) to narrow the report to just what you're looking for.
  5. Select Save customization if you want to reuse this exact setup later.

Modern View also adds a few things Classic View didn't have, including the ability to add more attribute columns, build pivot-style groupings, view data as charts, and (on QuickBooks Online Advanced) use Spreadsheet Sync to work with reports directly in Excel. Hi there, @kp8ntr.

I can understand the benefit of having the choice to have QuickBooks Online's (QBO) classic view set as the default and turn off the option of having the modern view when running reports. Due to various product updates, you can only manually click the button to return to Classic View.

We appreciate your feedback and agree with your desire for the option to choose classic view as the default in QBO, so please let us know what you think. I recommend leaving feedback to notify our engineers about the feature you need. They can then think about including it in later upgrades in such a way.

To send your input, here's how:

  1. In your QBO account, go to the Gear icon, then select Feedback.
  2. Type in your suggestions.
  3. Then click on Next.

Additionally, I'll share the following article with you so you can learn how to save the current report customization settings in QBO: Memorize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Just so you know you’re not alone, there are countless complaints going back months about this useless time-consuming modern view. The only “official” response is to use the gear to submit a comment. A waste of time, NO ONE at Intuit is responsive to the dozen upon dozens of complaints.

I don't like the detail in the modern view either. I want to be able to make the classic view my default. Maybe they will speed up that option when people switch to a different accounting products.

Modern view serves no purpose and is not helpful at all.  Saves zero time and I hope they trash it ASAP.

Regrettably, there is currently no direct option to disable the modern reporting view, but several workarounds can be attempted. Many modern reports feature a "Switch to classic view" button, granting temporary access to the older interface. Alternatively, some platforms provide a gear icon within the report for customizing the view, potentially allowing a return to the classic mode.

Offering direct feedback to the platform's developers about your preference for the classic view may influence future updates. Additionally, exploring third-party tools for forcing the classic view is an option, but caution is advised to ensure their safety and reliability.
