Nice to see you here in the QuickBooks Community, KatMalorie.  I will be happy to shed some light here. The most common reason we have seen is when a credit card account is set up incorrectly specifically as a bank-type account instead of a Credit Card-type account. If it is the case, here how to correct it.

  1. Go to the top menu and select Lists, then click Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the credit card account. Look at the Type column. If it says Bank, this is the problem.
  3. Right-click the account and select Edit Account.
  4. Change the Account Type dropdown from Bank to Credit Card.

Some other possible factors can be if the credit limit was entered as an "Opening Balance" or the card is linked as a sub-account incorrectly which you can check it out.

  1. Open your Chart of Accounts and double-click the credit card account to open its register.
  2. Scroll to the very top to find the first transaction, which will be labeled Opening Balance Equity under the Account column.
  3. If there is an amount listed there matching your credit limit, change that amount to 0.00.
  4. Click Record to save the changes.

Please let me know if you were able to get this resolved! Looking forward to your update.

Yes, the credit card was under 'bank' I amended it as per your very helpful instructions and the credit limit is no longer deducted from the total bank balance. Thank you.  However, I cannot see how to remove the credit limit, so on the transaction page it shows the credit limit as a balance then in QB it has the zero balance. Would I need to remove the account and re-load it? Thanks for your help.
