The "Something's not quite right" error when matching usually means the bank transaction amount doesn't yet equal the invoice or record you're matching it to, and QuickBooks needs the difference accounted for before it can complete the match. The fix is to resolve the difference inside the match flow, before clicking Match, by entering the fee as a negative amount.
How to match a transaction that includes a bank fee
- Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions.
- Find the transaction in the For Review (or Pending) tab. If you've already tried to match it and it's in the Posted tab, select the link in the Added or Matched column, select Undo, and it will move back to For Review.
- Select the transaction to expand it, then select Match.
- Select the invoice or record you want to match.
- If the amounts don't align, select the If needed, resolve the difference arrow (it appears below the matched record).
- Select the payee who charged the fee, choose the appropriate expense account (such as Bank Charges and Fees), and enter the fee amount as a negative number (for example, -10.00). This offsets the difference so the total matches the bank transaction amount.
- Select Match.
The posted transaction will show "multiple transactions" — one for the invoice payment and one for the fee expense. That's expected.
If you prefer, you can also use a bank deposit
This approach works well when you regularly receive payments through accounts that deduct fees before depositing:
- Go to +Create, then Bank Deposit.
- Select the bank account the funds landed in.
- In the Add funds to this deposit section, enter the fee as a negative amount on a separate line and select the expense account for bank fees.
- Save the deposit, then match it to the downloaded bank transaction in the For Review tab.
For guidance on which expense account to use for your specific fee type, your accountant is the right resource.
If you're still seeing the error after trying these steps, open QuickBooks in an incognito or private browser window and try again. Cached browser data can sometimes cause the match screen to behave unexpectedly.
