Question

Is it possible to transfer the ownership/control of my online QuickBooks account to a new owner who is purchasing my business? They have an Intuit account. Thank you.

Yes, that's possible, BBQGrilling.

I'm here to make the process easy for you in transferring the ownership of your QuickBooks account to the new owner.

Transferring ownership of a QBO account entails updating the primary admin and billing details. It's essential to note that only the current primary admin can initiate this process. Please verify that you have the necessary permissions before proceeding.

Here are the steps to transfer ownership of a QBO account:

  1. Log in to QuickBooks Online as the current primary admin.
  2. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Manage users.
  3. Find the user you want to make the primary admin.
  4. In the User Type column, make sure they are listed as Admin. If they’re not, select Edit.
  5. Select the small arrow ▼ in the Action section and choose Make primary admin.
  6. Select Make primary admin again to confirm the change.
  7. Sign out of QuickBooks.

Check this article for reference: Request to be the primary admin or contact.

If you require further assistance with transferring ownership, feel free to add your queries below. I'll be more than happy to provide additional help.

This does not address the issue we’re having. A former partner shows up as the responsible owner on all financial transactions involving Intuit - term loans, etc. we have to get it corrected and no one from QB support has figured it out.

I want to provide a timely solution to your concern, Gacct. Thus, I'd like to ask for more details to help you achieve your goal.

Can you please provide additional information about your specific concern within QuickBooks Online? What do you need to correct within your company? Have you encountered any error messages while transferring your company's primary admin?

I'd appreciate any further details you can provide so I can help you. I'll be keeping an eye out for your response to this.

@BBQGrilling

Before you transfer Primary Admin access to the new owner, consider converting your data to the QB Desktop file format for your archive. You can use the trial version to access the file if needed.

I tried this, but it doesn't transfer ownership or the SSN behind the account. We need to change the owner of the company in both QuickBooks and in payments and also in receipts by card.

Was this ever resolved? I need to do the same thing and am getting all the run arounds... I don't understand why we can't update this ourselves.

Hi there, @SJones11111. Transferring full ownership of a QuickBooks Online account requires Primary Admin access. From there, you can add the new owner as a user in the company file and then transfer the Primary Admin role, allowing them to take full control of the account.

The reason you cannot simply swap names is that QuickBooks Online requires a formal invitation and acceptance process. This ensures the security of your financial data and properly links the subscription to the new owner's specific Intuit account. To resolve this, use the Manage Users section to promote the new owner to Primary Admin, which officially transfers legal ownership and billing responsibility to them.

For more details, please see this page: Change the primary admin role.

If you are not the Primary Admin or no longer have contact with the previous admin, you can submit a request to take over the account. See this article: Request to be the primary admin or contact.

Completing this process transfers legal responsibility for the subscription and data. Once the new owner accepts, the company file will appear on their Intuit dashboard. Your access will then either transition to a standard admin or be removed entirely, depending on the permissions the new owner selects for you.
