Why do I get "we could not fetch your accounts from your bank" when connecting American Express to QuickBooks Online?

If I could I would upload a screenshot but this platform won't let me.

Every time I try to connect my Amex CC, it says I've done it successfully, then I return to QBO online, and I get an error message.

This message usually means QuickBooks made it through the sign-in step with American Express but hit a snag pulling the account data back over. Here's how to work through it.

Step 1: Try the connection again

  1. Go to All apps, then Banking, then Bank transactions.
  2. Select Update.

A retry clears this up more often than not, since it's frequently a one-time hiccup in the handoff between American Express and QuickBooks.

Step 2: Check American Express's website directly

Sign in to your American Express account through your browser to rule out anything on their end.

  1. Sign in to the American Express website.
  2. Look for any account messages, notifications, or alerts that might need your attention.
  3. Watch for any display issues while browsing, since these can block the connection to QuickBooks.

If everything looks normal there, go back to QuickBooks and try the update again.

Step 3: Refresh your American Express sign-in info in QuickBooks

If you've updated anything on American Express's site recently, like your username or password, make sure QuickBooks has the same current info.

  1. Go to All apps, then Banking, then Bank transactions.
  2. Select the account card for your American Express account.
  3. Select Edit, then Edit sign in info.
  4. Enter your current login details, then select Save and connect.

Once you're connected, you're set to start categorizing and matching your American Express transactions in QuickBooks.

Let us know how it goes, or if the error message still persists, and we will be happy to help troubleshoot further.

I know how important it is to connect and manage your credit card account in QuickBooks Online (QBO), ryan.

To further assist you appropriately, may I know the specific error code (message) you encountered while trying to navigate with your American Express credit card account in QBO? Any additional information will be much appreciated.

In the meantime, we can try signing out and signing in again with your QBO account. However, if the issue persists, we can log in with your account using a private browser.

Here's how:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If there's no issue using a private browser, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. If the problem is still present, I recommend using another supported browser.

You might also want to check our system requirements for QuickBooks Online to ensure the best experience when using the platform.

Additionally, I've added an article that you can check whenever you need to fix mistakes on your bank or credit card statement.

Feel free to reply if you have more bank connectivity or any QuickBooks-related concerns. We're here to assist you 24/7.

@ryan-spire-comme

Try opening your QBO account on any private/incognito browser. If the same error persists, use MT Online or one of the converter tools (e.g csv2qbo @ $60 one time license) as a workaround.
