Colorado FAMLI Tax update

I got a notice from the Colorado Dept of Labor and Employment a while back that the Colorado Paid Family and Medical Leave Tax (PFML) was changing to 0.88%, but I can't figure out how to update it in Quickbooks. I need to submit my first payroll of 2026 by Wednesday, so I need to get this updated ASAP. Thanks!

Hi there, SarahCO.

We can navigate to the Payroll settings to update your Colorado Paid Family and Medical Leave Tax (PFML). Let’s get this sorted out so you can catch up and submit your payroll on time.

  1. Navigate to Settings and select Payroll settings.
  2. In the Colorado tax section, click on Edit✎.
  3. Locate the policy you want to edit under Colorado Paid Family and Medical Leave Tax (PFML) and select Edit next to it.
  4. Update the rate as necessary, then click Save.
  5. Ensure you click Save again and then select Done.

For more information about this process, refer to this article: Set up Colorado FAMLI.

Before we finish, I suggest you explore QuickBooks Live Expert Assisted to streamline your accounting, maintain precise financial records, and access professional support. This could free up valuable time, allowing you to concentrate on expanding your business.

Thanks for your help. I did steps 1 and 2, but for step 3, there is no "edit" next to Colorado Paid Family and Medical Leave Tax (PFML). The only things I am able to click on are the pencil next to the account #, the pencil next to PFML coverage for 2025, change coverage for the upcoming year (which only gives me the option to change the number of employees or enter exempt), and create contribution rates. I can't find any option to change the %.

Hi there, Sarah.

I appreciate you letting me know what you've tried so far. Since you're unable to find the option to change the rate for Colorado Paid Family and Medical Leave Tax (PFML), I recommend reaching out our Live Support Team. They'll be able to review your profile and account details to assist further and ensure everything is set up correctly.

Here's how:

  1. Click the (?) Help button in the top-right corner of your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Choose the Assistant tab to get help from the QB assistant.
  3. Type in Talk to an expert to get options for expert help.
  4. Select your preferred method to reach out to them. Be sure to check their support hours to know when they're available.

From what I can tell, QB automatically updated it to .88%.  If you manually do the calc for the FMLI filing, it should be .88% of wages.

Did you have any problems with your 941 wages not matching the wages on your Colorado FMLI and CO Unemployment filings from QB?  Mine do not match and the difference is related to the FMLI premiums.  I am not quite satisfied with the answers I got from QB experts.

I am using QB Online.

I just tried filing our CO-FAMLI Q1 filing online.  We have only 2 employees in Colorado & when I input the Withheld Amount, this message popped up: "Withheld amount cannot exceed employee rate (0.44%)."  So I checked and QB has the correct .88% in the Payroll Item list.  However, when I go to our employees checks and calculate the FAMLI tax, it is calculating at .45% instead of the .44% that it should be.  There is nowhere to edit this in the Payroll Item setup just as what was mentioned previously.  This is a bug that QuickBooks needs to fix ASAP!

Now I have an excess amount that must be credited back to our 2 employees.  I will have to manually put in what the FAMLI Withholding should have been so that I may file our CO-FAMLI on time.  Then I will have to manually have to calculate & OVERRIDE the FAMLI tax each time I run Payroll.  This is a major pain & I should not have to do this, so QUICKBOOKS please EXPEDITE a fix for this!
