Efiling 1099s, Getting on the IRS portal

Most of my clients have 2-3 1099s to file. I have one client who has (30) 1099 Misc forms that need to be filed.  In the past, I've just run them through desktop and mailed them.  This year I see that if a business has 20 or more forms to be filed it MUST be done through their portal.  I'm in the middle of getting the first step which, I think, is a TCC code. I just read that it takes 45 days to get one.  I'm not sure what I do as it is now 12Jan24.  Any thoughts on this?

Welcome to the Community, One Light Ahead!

While it usually takes around 45 days to receive the TCC code, it may take less time. If you want to follow up on your TCC code, you can contact the IRS. To learn more about the registration process and the requirements for filing tax forms using IRIS, you can visit E-file Forms 1099 with IRIS.

In addition, you can go through this article to know more about what's changed with 1099s and W-2s this tax year (2023): Understand the IRS regulations for filing 1099s and W-2s.

I've also listed some supplementary articles that can help you manage your Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC better:

You can reach us again if you have follow-up concerns regarding e-filing your 1099s with IRIS. The Community is always glad to hear from you.

Will Quickbooks payroll be compliant with the IRIS requirement for filing W2s at year end?

QuickBooks Payroll files W-2s through the Social Security Administration (SSA), not through the IRIS portal. The IRS designed IRIS specifically for Form 1099s and Form W-2G.

If you need to file these forms, you can e-file them directly through IRIS, separate from your Form W-2 filing.
