I live in NY State but not the metro area and I can't complete the payroll setup without entering a NYC/Yonkers tax id, which I do not have. Can anyone help?

When setting up payroll, you may have set QuickBooks to file your tax returns through E-file. By doing so, you'll be asked to enter your State Tax Id. Let me share some additional information to ensure your state taxes is calculated accurately.

First, let's ensure that your QuickBooks software and payroll tax table is updated to the latest release version. Once completed, let's close QuickBooks to ensure that all components are updated.

Now, let's open QuickBooks and review how your State tax and employee payroll information is setup.

Here's how to review your State Tax information:

1. Go to the Lists menu.
2. Choose Payroll item.
3. Double-click on the City tax item.
4. Review the tax details and remove the incorrect tax ID number.
5. Follow the onscreen instruction to complete the process.

Lastly, here's how you can check the employee's state information:

1. Go to the Employees menu.
2. Choose Employee Center.
3. Double-click the employee’s name, one at a time.
4. Select Payroll Info on the left.
5. Please make sure the Pay Frequency is correct.
6. Click the Taxes button.
7. In the State Taxes tab, review the Filing Status and Allowances fields. Make the necessary corrections.
8. Go to Other tab and review the local or city tax item assigned to your employees: 
9. Hit OK.

If the unexpected behavior only affects the most recent payroll checks, QuickBooks Desktop has an auto-calculation feature that carries over the underpaid taxes for the next payroll run.
