I acknowledge that having the option to schedule a pay twice a year is feasible on your end, Jeff. I am also glad you raised this concern here.

At the moment, creating a pay schedule that is twice a year is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO) because there are certain taxes that need to be filed and calculated monthly and quarterly.

As a workaround, you can create unscheduled payroll and pay them through bonus or commission twice a year. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Payroll tab and pick the Employees option.
  2. In the upper right corner, click the Run Payroll dropdown and select either Bonus only or Commission only.
  3. Based on your selection, you may be asked additional questions. Enter any information about taxes or paycheck calculations (if applicable). Once complete, select Continue.
  4. Review the pay period and pay date. Choose the employees you'd like to pay.
  5. Press Actions, then Edit paycheck to enter your pay details.
    • You can enter hours, compensation, memos, or any other paycheck info.
    • If you use QuickBooks Time, select Review Approved Time.
  6. Then, Preview payroll and check the QuickBooks bank account to track your payroll.
  7. Select Preview payroll details, and choose either:
    • Save for later
    • Submit payroll
  8. Once done, tip Close.

A flexible pay schedule is an important option for a business to better pay its employees based on their role and I believe this is where your concern is rooted. If you have additional questions concerning this topic, don't hesitate to return here by leaving a reply below. Have a good day.

What kind of payment? Pay bills to your vendor or else?
