when does the 2024 payroll update come out to be able to print current year W2s and 1099's?

I appreciate you connecting, @higginscrabs. I'll provide details regarding W2 and 1099 inside QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

For QBDT Payroll Assisted users, please note that they can view and print W-2 forms starting on January 10. Also, if you're using the Payroll Enhanced or Standard version, the forms will be available for printing on January 1. I'll also add this reference for more information: Print your W-2 and W-3 forms.

That article includes the text:

"Buy W-2 paper if you’re printing from QuickBooks and mailing official copies to your employees. We recommend ordering W-2 kits (W-2s and envelopes) through us to make sure the W-2s print correctly. "

This is bad advice. There is no reason at all to buy W-2 forms, which are not required. QuickBooks will print W-2's on plain paper, both for your employees and for filing with the SSA - if you don't file electronically. Red drop-out ink forms are not required.

Not only is printing on plain paper much, much cheaper than buying forms, it is much easier because no alignment is required - because the entire form and data prints.
