Submit EPS for 2024/25 to claim Employment Allowance & Small Employers Relief

Hello,

I have realised that the charity I am treasurer for is eligible for Employment Allowance & Small Employers Relief.

That said I did not have this selected as an option in 24/25. It is now selected din 25/26.

I have an employee who was on Mat Leave from Feb to Oct 2025 and need to claim for Small Employer Relief only for 24/25.

How do I go about submitting an EPS for 24/25 which will now have Employment Allowance selected as "Yes, I qualify" and "Small Employer's Relief" as "Yes, I qualify", to claim this back from HMRC for 24/25.

I can not seem to work out how to submit EPS retrospective to HMRC to claim this and do I submit for the months of February and March 2025 only?

Hi there, @lovebartonoxford, glad to have you here. I understand you're trying to submit an EPS for the 2024/25 tax year to claim Employment Allowance and Small Employers Relief for your charity. I'd be happy to clarify the steps you can take to address this situation and share some information on how to process and claim your employment allowance in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To address this issue, we need to roll back to the previous tax year, following step 8 of the year-end process: How to return to the previous tax year (if required). This process involves several steps to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with HMRC requirements.

Firstly, you'll need to turn on the employer's allowance in your payroll for QuickBooks Advanced and for Core. Then, you must re-run all pay runs for the affected period to ensure they correctly reflect the employment allowance in the P32 report. This is crucial for accurate tax calculations and reporting. After re-running the pay runs, you'll need to resubmit the Full Payment Submission (FPS) as corrections to HMRC. This entire process involves deleting the original pay runs, carefully rerunning them with the correct settings, and then resubmitting the FPS for each affected period.

For more information, you can check these articles from our resource hub:

Alternatively, you can use HMRC's Basic PAYE Tools. This free software allows you to report backdated employee's allowance for the previous tax year. This option is particularly useful if you're using QuickBooks, which doesn't allow claiming employment allowance or submitting an Employer Payment Summary (EPS) for past years. With the Basic PAYE Tools, you can claim Employment Allowance for the year using the P32 form. This method ensures that you can still claim the allowance even if your primary software doesn't support retrospective claims.

Lastly, I recommend consulting with the live support team for additional assistance. They can help you navigate the rollback process to return to the previous tax year, correct pay runs, and ensure Employment Allowance is properly applied. Their ability to take a screenshare and work on your account in real time can be incredibly helpful in resolving issues like this efficiently. They may also be able to confirm whether any alternative approaches exist based on your specific payroll setup and circumstances.

I want to make sure you feel confident and well-informed about your account's tax year. If you have any additional questions, need further clarification, or encounter issues while processing your Employment Allowance in QuickBooks Online, please don't hesitate to reach out.
