The process to convert the QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online is by migrating it, Dian.

Can you please share which type of QuickBooks Desktop region are you using? Is it the US or Canadian version? Please note that you cannot migrate the QuickBooks Desktop with these regions to the QuickBooks Online international version. Alternatively, I suggest using a third-party converter tool for the migration.

To move your file from desktop to online within the same region. You need to restore the portable file first before moving it to the online platform. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks and log in as an admin.
  2. Go to the File menu and click Open or Restore Company  (if your file isn't open, directly tap Open or Restore Company box).
  3. Choose "Restore a portable file," then click "Next."
  4. Select your portable company file. It should look like this: [Unique company file name].qbm. Then select Open.
  5. Either rename the portable company file or save it to a different folder. (Review the notes on the "Where do you want to restore the file" page, then select Next.)
  6. When you're ready to open your file, select Save.

After restoring the file, let's proceed to migrate your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. Check the complete steps in the Migration tool built into the QuickBooks desktop dropdown section in this article: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. This article is the US-based version, but it is also applicable to the Canadian version.

Please note that if your QuickBooks Desktop version is 2021 or older, or if you don't have access to QuickBooks Desktop, you will need to use the web-based migration tool instead. The steps for this process are available in the Web-based migration dropdown section mentioned in the article above for both US and Canadian versions.

What's more, there are a lot of things you can learn about moving your desktop files to QuickBooks online. You can refer to this article for guidance moving forward: Learn about switching from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online. This article is the US-based version, but it is also applicable to the Canadian version.

@Dian-Hibbert

Where is your company located? US or another country?

You can use the trial version to restore the QBM file and convert it to QB Online.
