I go to the desktop version and under Company, I choose "export your file over to QuickBooks online" I go thru the prompts and get an error pop up saying that it could not upload my data. How do I remedy this?

Which QB Desktop year version do you have? Make sure you are converting data from a supported version (2020-2023) to QB Online. You can utilize the trial version for QB Desktop 2023 to upgrade your file if required.

    Hi there, ayangdmd.

Let me help in converting your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

To avoid any issues when converting your QuickBooks Desktop company file to QuickBooks Online, we need to check the following:

    • Make sure your QuickBooks is up to date. You can press F2 or Ctrl + 1 to check the QuickBooks version and release. You’ll have greater success if you have the following QuickBooks versions and releases or higher: 2019 R17, 2020 R15, 2021 R10, and 2022 R5.
    • Check if your company file isn't too big to export.
    • Check if the file exceeds the total target limit of 750,000.
    • Convert your data within 60 days from the time you created your QuickBooks Online account.

Also, if you have QuickBooks 2018 version or older, you'll have to use the QuickBooks Desktop restoration tool, or you can install a trial version of QuickBooks 2021 or newer to open and upgrade the file as what @Fiat suggested.

Once you're ready, you can proceed in moving your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. you can check out the detailed steps for QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Enterprise in this article: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. Just scroll-down to Step 2: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.
