The safest way to move your company file to your local hard drive is by creating a backup and restoring it.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the File menu and select Back Up Company > Create Local Backup.
  2. Choose Local Backup and click Next.
  3. In the Local Backup Only section, click Browse and select your local hard drive (your Desktop or Documents folder) as the destination. Do not save the backup back onto the USB drive.
  4. Click Save it now and select Next to complete the backup.

Next, restore the backup to your hard drive.

  1. Go back to the File menu again and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy and click Next.
  3. Choose Local backup and click Next.
  4. Browse your computer to find the backup file you just saved to your hard drive, then click Open.
  5. Read the warning message about location, then click Next.
  6. When the Save Company File window opens, navigate to the folder on your hard drive where you want your permanent company file to live
  7. Click Save.

After the restore is done, QuickBooks will open the file straight from your local hard drive. You can check this by pressing F2 on your keyboard while in QuickBooks.
