Question

Opening a Company file located on a network drive

I have a 3 user copy of QB Premier 2020 (Contractor Edition) and have been using a Company file located on a my computer with another copy on another computer on the same network. but the other computer runs so slowly accessing the co. file from my computer I have moved the company file to an external hard drive connected via USB to my Nighthawk router. I have been able to get the file to work in single user mode from both computers but if I try to switch to Multi-user mode I get error "H202 This company file is located on another computer and QuickBooks needs some help connecting. .

Here's how to fix this problem

On the computer where the company file is located open... QuickBooks Database Server Manager. The database server manager will scan your files and restore the connection."

Obviously this cannot be done since the Company file is not located on a "Computer" but rather is located on a hard drive "on" the router.

anybody know how to deal with this?

I appreciate for sharing the details with me, Glen.

I'd be glad to help you get around the error you received in opening your company file.

The error H202 will prompt when your company file is located on another computer and need some connection. To isolate this issue, You'll want to ensure your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software is updated to the latest release. This way, we can ensure the program is packed with the newest features and fixes. Let me show you how.

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Go to the Update Now tab.
  4. Select Get Updates to start the download.
  5. When the download finishes, restart QuickBooks.
  6. Then accept the option to install the new release.

You can also check this link for more details: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

If this not the case, I recommend copying or moving your company file to your computer hard drive. Let me also add this article that you can use for additional troubleshooting steps : How to fix Error H202 and H505.

I'm also add these links that you can utilize for future tasks. These can walk you through the steps on how to back up and restore your company file from other computers:

I have updated QB. It is up to date on both PC's that I am currently using.

As I explained my company file is on a network drive... not on a computer

Can you please tell me how to open it in multi-user mode? that is what I asked.
