Question

Can I split for MTD Quickbooks 50:50 for submission for husbands MTD where accounts are for jointly owned properties with wife who is not MTD?

Husband has one sole trader QB subscription and one joint property subscription 50:50 with wife. How do I report only 50% of property income from QB for husband as wife is not yet MTD

While QuickBooks Online does not have a built-in feature to automatically split a final Making Tax Digital (MTD) submission 50/50, you can easily achieve the correct 50% reporting using the bank feeds.

When the property transactions come through the bank feed, they will naturally show 100% of the rent and expenses. Here is how you can report only the husband's 50% share:

  1. Navigate to the All apps menu, then click Bank transactions.
  2. Locate the 100% rent deposit in your Bank transactions tab.
  3. Instead of clicking Add, select the transaction and choose Split.
  4. Divide the transaction:
  • Categorize 50% of the amount to the correct income or expense account for your husband's MTD reporting.
  • Categorize the remaining 50% to an equity/drawings account. This keeps the other 50% completely out of his MTD Profit and Loss calculations.

Also, this may involve creating a Journal Entry (JE) to move exactly 50% of the income and 50% of the expenses into a separate equity account for the wife. However, I highly recommend reaching out to an accounting professional to help you set up this exact workflow, since journal entries can be complex and directly impact your tax reporting.

Alternatively, if you want to avoid JE, you can use the Split function directly in your Bank feed. When a rent payment or expense comes through, you can split the transaction so that 50% goes to your standard property categories, and the other 50% goes directly to a non-business Equity account for the wife.
