Question

The State of Vermont requires withholding remittances on the same frequency as federal withholding remittances. Why is QBO payroll not filing state remittances on time?

If the federal withholding remittances are semi-monthly, the State of Vermont requires semi-monthly remittances. QuickBooks Online Payroll has not filed semi-monthly remittance of payroll withholding and required wage and withholding information. So, not only is the payroll withholding remittance late, the required information has not been filed. To add insult to injury, QuickBooks Online Payroll support was unable to tell me why the return filed with the State of Vermont did not match the state payroll tax return presented in QuickBooks online. What are the best alternatives to QuickBooks Online Payroll? It looks like I may need a new payroll provider that can comply with state law.

Thank you for laying this out clearly, James.

I completely understand how important payroll compliance is, especially with timely filings and accurate information. The late state remittances and discrepancies you identified are certainly concerning.

To start, have you activated automated tax filing for your state taxes? If so, please know that QuickBooks will automatically file your taxes and process payments on your behalf based on the scheduled due dates.

However, since the required information hasn’t been filed, and the state return doesn’t match QuickBooks' report, I recommend reconnecting with our Live Payroll Support Team. I know you’ve already contacted them, but it's the best we can do given that they have the specialized tools to securely access your account and help sort this out thoroughly.
