The error message "exchange rate is null or empty" in QuickBooks Online means a multi-currency transaction is missing the required exchange rate, Rawa. We'll provide more details below to help you resolve this issue.

This error occurs when you try to receive a payment in a foreign currency, but the program can't automatically pull the exchange rate for that specific date. Also, it's because the Multicurrency feature is active in your company file, but the exchange rate field contains no value. To address this, here's how:

  1. Go to the Banking page and locate the payment you're trying to match.
  2. Open the transaction details and click on the transaction to open the details pane.
  3. Ensure the currency listed for the transaction is the foreign currency you received.
  4. Manually enter the exchange rate. Find the Rate field and enter the correct rate.
  5. After entering the exchange, proceed to categorize the transaction and match it with an invoice or sales receipt.

You can also work with an accountant for other ways on how to handle receiving payment in a foreign currency. They can provide alternatives to help you streamline this process. If you don't have an accountant, I can help you find one. Feel free to visit this page: Find a QuickBooks ProAdvisor.
