Let me show you how to record dividend payments through QuickBooks Online.

 

Step 1: Set up a dividend account

 

  1. On Accounting tab, select Chart of accounts
  2. Select New
  3. Enter the Account name.
  4. For the Account type, select Owner's equity.
  5. For the Detail type, you may select Partner Distributions
  6. Select Save.

 

Step 2: Record the dividend payment

 

  1. On the + New button, select Cheque.
  2. Choose the Payee from the dropdown menu.
  3. Select the Bank Account from which the dividend will be paid.
  4. Select the dividend account created for the category, enter the amount and select GST if applicable.
  5. Select Save and close.

 

You can also seek advice from your accountant as there are different ways to record dividends like journal entry. You may also find an accountant near you here.
