Question

My Mileage for the last tax year is shown as potential deductions and isn't included in my year end figures, is this normal?

my tracked miles arn't included, im a sole trader and travel between clients so i don't know why they are still potential and not actual.

    Hello there, abby. In QuickBooks Self-Employed, mileage stays as a potential deduction until you review and mark each trip as Business. Once you do that, they'll count toward your year-end totals. Since you travel between clients, those trips definitely qualify, so you’ll just need to confirm them in the app. If any trips weren't automatically captured, you can add them manually, too.

     

    Also, for any vehicle-related expenses, categorize them as Business and use Car and Truck as the expense category so everything lines up at tax time.

     

    QuickBooks will then calculate your deduction using the standard IRS mileage rate, but you're not locked in, you can always switch to the actual expenses method when you file if that suits you better.
