If you log mileage as a standard receipt or expense in QuickBooks, it will be treated as an actual vehicle cost, such as gas or repairs, rather than as the standard mileage deduction. To receive the standard deduction, you must use the built-in Mileage tracker instead of the receipt scanner.

First, you’ll need to remove the receipt you entered to avoid accidentally claiming the expense twice. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your Transactions menu, then select Receipt.
  2. Find the receipt you entered for the mileage.
  3. Click the View link under the ACTION column, then select Delete.

Next, record the mileage in the dedicated mileage section to ensure the allowable expense is calculated based on the current standard mileage rate. Here’s how:

  1. Navigate to Mileage on the left-hand navigation menu.
  2. Click the Add trip button.
  3. Enter the date, distance, starting location, and ending location.
  4. Be sure to toggle or categorize the trip as Business.
  5. Select the appropriate options for Business purpose and Vehicle fields.
  6. Once finished, click Save.

If you want to turn on automatic mileage tracking in your QuickBooks mobile app and allow location access for easy tracking going forward, refer to Steps 2 and 3 of this article: Automatically track mileage in QuickBooks Online.
