I'm here to ensure you can open the Excel file seamlessly, Paul. Let me provide the troubleshooting steps to get past the error.

In addition to Deity Alpha's answer, ensure the file extension matches the file format. An Excel file should have an extension like .xlsx or .xls.

Aside from that, use the Excel built-in repair tool to fix corrupted files by following these steps:

  1. In Excel, go to File and select Open.
  2. Browse to the file location and select the file.
  3. Click the arrow next to the Open button.
  4. Select Open and Repair.

Next, export the report again. If you still get the same result, change group permissions for the file. Here's how:

  1. Right-click on the file and select Properties.
  2. Go to the Security tab and click Edit.
  3. Add Everyone and give full control permissions.
  4. Click Apply and OK.

What file format do you mean?

I'm exporting an .xlsx file out of a report the same as I've done before without one hitch ever.

ALERT

Excel cannot open the file 'MAINT.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding the error you're experiencing with opening your Excel file, Shahid690.

This error occurs when:

  1. The file extension doesn't match the file's actual format (e.g., ".xlsx" is declared, but the file isn't saved as a valid Excel workbook).
  2. The file itself is corrupted or unreadable.
  3. Spreadsheet group permissions or security settings are restricting access.

To rectify these, I recommend following the troubleshooting procedures mentioned by my peer Rasa-LilaM above.

If none of the approaches work and you've verified the file's format and permissions, I'd encourage you to reach out to our Phone Support Team. They can conduct a deeper investigation into the issue preventing you from accessing your Excel file downloaded from QuickBooks Online. You'll find the contact options within your QuickBooks program by navigating to 'Help' or the '?' icon.

I'm adding these articles that can help you customize your report and save its customization so you won't have to modify it again in case you need the same information in the future:
