QuickBooks Online invoicing, like most of the rest of QuickBooks Online, has gone from lame to worse.  Many here post that most new or updated features are interior to both QuickBooks Desktop and even to the prior versions in QuickBooks Online.

Intuit has had 25 years to make QuickBooks Online into a decent, if not just good, offering. It has not done so. Do you think it will any time soon? I don't.
