Budgeting is a crucial part of every business. I can see the importance of being able to run a Budget vs. Actual by project report in order to see how your business is doing. I'd be glad to steer you in the right direction.
The ability to run a Budget vs. Actual by project isn't available yet in QuickBooks. Seeing how beneficial this report would be to you and your business, I recommend sending feedback to our engineers. You can send feedback by clicking on the Gear icon and navigating to Feedback.
As a workaround, I suggest creating a budget and subdividing it by project. This allows you to easily customize the Budget vs. Actuals report as you'll know the amounts for your projects. It's important to note that creating this budget doesn’t show in your Projects tab.
Here’s how you can create the budget:
Click on the Gear icon.
Choose Budgeting.
Click on Add budget.
In the Name field, enter the budget name.
Select the Fiscal Year and Interval of the budget.
From the Subdivide by drop-down, choose Customer.
Select the project from the Add subdivided budget for drop-down.
Click on Next.
Enter the budget for your project in the corresponding accounts.
Click on Save.
Then, you can pull up and customize your Budget vs. Actuals report to see the amounts of the budget. You can follow these steps:
Click on Reports from the left panel.
Look for Budget vs. Actuals on the search bar.
Click on Customize.
Click on the Filter section.
Tick on Customer.
Select the project name from the drop-down.
Click on Run Report.
