Can I customise the names on the existing chart of accounts? I don't want to add new ones, just make the language more relevant on existing list?

Yes you can change an existing chart of account name to something else. 

When you are in the chart of accounts>scroll down to the account you want to rename> right- hand side next to account history there is a drop-down arrow> click drop-down arrow> edit>  a pop-up box will show and you can change the display name there.
