I use ref numbers for purchase docs, eg 1/9 means No. 1 in Sept. I file documents in this order. How do I create report in number order to match files?

There is not a report which brings through ref numbers in number order.If for example you are using a custom field/memo  it will not order it in number sequence in reports with this information in it would run in Supplier name order only. There is not currently a way to change this.You can certainly leave feedback here for our product developers.
