Question

Longer Accounting Period

Hello all,

I have taken a client on and am producing his first year accounts.

He incorporated his business on the 10th of Feb 2025.

When setting up this client I chose March 2025 as start of his financial year so the end of the year ie 28th of February, is correct (matches companies house date)

Quickbooks is only allowing me to produce accounts for 12 months period, the client however had some transactions between the 10th of Feb 2025 to 28th of Feb 2025. How do I include these transactions in my first year accounts.

Equally, how do I submit corporation tax since it can’t be longer than 12 months. So the first return would be from the 10th of Feb 2025 to the 9th of Feb 2026 and the second would be from the 10th of Feb 2026 to the 28th of Feb 2026.

I know how to calculate everything I just don’t know the technical side of Quickbooks.

Can someone advice please ?

Best regards

Use custom date ranges in QuickBooks Online to capture all transactions from 10 February 2025. For the Corporation Tax (CT) split, generate separate reports for each CT period and enter those figures into your CT software to file both returns.

Since your financial year starts in March 2025, please confirm whether you entered transactions from February 10 to February 28, 2025, into QuickBooks Online, as they may fall outside your default reporting window or before your setup date.

Once confirmed, follow these steps to include them in your reports:

  1. Go to Reports in the left menu. (If you are working through QuickBooks Online Accountant, navigate to your client's company file first, then select Reports from the left menu.)

  2. Open any report, such as Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, or Trial Balance.

  3. Set the Report period to Custom dates.

  4. Set the From date to 10/02/2025 and the To date to 28/02/2025.

  5. Click Save As, then Save.

QuickBooks Online pulls all transactions across that full period regardless of the financial year setting. The financial year start only affects default date range presets, not your accessible data.

Next, run the same reports twice using custom date ranges:

  • CT Period 1: 10/02/2025 – 09/02/2026

  • CT Period 2: 10/02/2026 – 28/02/2026

Export both your Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet reports to Excel or PDF for your CT600 returns. QuickBooks Online does not file CT returns; you must handle the split in your external CT software.

Your current financial year start of March is correct, so your default year-end is 28 February, which aligns with your Companies House date. No changes to your financial year start are needed.

To confirm your current setting:

  1. Click the Gear icon.

  2. Select Account and settings.

  3. Go to Advanced.

  4. Find the Accounting tab and verify the financial year start is set to March.

QuickBooks Online doesn't support a "long period" accounting year natively, so use custom date ranges as a workaround. Your CT software handles the statutory split, while QuickBooks Online acts as your data source.
