Tags in QuickBooks Online have been replaced by Custom Fields, an enhanced, more flexible way to track and report on transaction data.
Tags became read-only in May 2025. You can still view tagged data on existing transactions, but you can no longer add new tags. Tags are scheduled for permanent removal in mid-2028, after which tagged data will no longer be visible on historical transactions. Migrate your tags to Custom Fields, or export any reports you rely on, before that removal date arrives.
How to migrate tags to Custom Fields:
- Go to Settings, then select Tags.
- Select Migrate tags to custom fields.
- Up to 100 tags will be auto imported and all transaction forms will be pre-selected. Review the selections and make any necessary changes. For additional tags, you'll need to add them to a custom field manually.
- Select Save.

Tags on Bank Deposits (no migration path):
Custom Fields aren't available on Bank Deposits, so migration isn't an option for that transaction type. Instead:
- Go to Settings, then select Tags.
- Select the tag you want to keep a record of, then select Run report.
- Customise the Report period to capture the data you need.
- Select the export icon and choose Export to Excel or Export to PDF.
