How do I save a drill-down transaction report to a Report Group in QuickBooks Online?

I ran a transaction report by clicking the total expenses on my P&L. The resulting transaction report (and many other reports) doesn't have the option of switching to modern view. Modern view affects whether I can save a custom report to a group, I learned yesterday. So why is modern view not always available?

Every report in QuickBooks Online now opens in Modern view, including transaction reports you reach by clicking into a line on a report like Profit and Loss, so there's nothing to switch first. You can save any of these reports straight to a group.

Save a report to a Report Group

  1. Run or open the report, including a drill-down transaction report.
  2. Select Save as in the report's toolbar.
  3. In the Report name field, enter a name for the saved report.
  4. Under Add to group, select an existing group, or select + Add new group and name a new one.
  5. Turn on Share with others if you want other users to see this saved report.
  6. Select Save.

You can find and manage your saved reports and groups anytime under Reports, then Custom reports.

Hello there, Joan. The option to switch to Modern View in QuickBooks Online (QBO) isn't always available for certain types of reports, especially when they are generated as linked drill-down reports.

If the report page doesn’t show the Switch to Modern View option, you may already be in the Modern View.

To save a custom report to a group, you can click the Save As button from the Profit and Loss - Transaction Report page without needing to switch views. From this point, you can save the custom report to one of the available groups.

See reference below:

If you need to see the Switch to Modern View button within the Transaction Report that is pulled up from the Profit and Loss report's expense total, you can click the Ellipsis icon to switch to Classic View.
