Great question, Queinnacct. Yes, you can import parent and sub-accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO) by formatting your spreadsheet correctly.

Whether you are using an existing spreadsheet, creating a new one, or exporting your chart of accounts from another QuickBooks company, ensure you have these columns first:

  • Account Name
  • Type
  • Detail Type
  • Account number (optional)

Once done, format the sub-account by using a colon (:) to separate the parent account from the sub-account. Example: Main Account: Sub-Account or Utilities: Gas.

For more examples of how to format subaccounts, please refer to the table in this article: Importing your Chart of Accounts to QBO.
