If receipt photos are coming out blurry through the QuickBooks Online mobile app even though your phone camera works fine in other apps, the issue is almost always with the app itself rather than your device. Here's how to troubleshoot and keep your receipt workflow moving in the meantime.
Step 1: Try these app troubleshooting steps
- Update the app. Make sure your QuickBooks Online mobile app is on the latest version. Outdated app versions can have camera compatibility issues that are fixed in newer releases. Check the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) for any available updates.
- Refresh the app data. In the QuickBooks mobile app, tap the Menu icon, then the Gear icon, and choose Refresh data. Tap Yes to confirm. Then try snapping a receipt again.
- Reinstall the app. If refreshing the data doesn't help, uninstall the QuickBooks Online app from your phone and reinstall it from the App Store or Google Play. This clears any corrupted data and gives the app a clean start.
If the problem continues after these steps, contact QuickBooks support through the app - go to Help (?) and select Contact Us, or type "talk to a human" in the Assistant. They can investigate whether there's a known issue with your specific device model and app version.
Step 2: Use alternative upload methods while you troubleshoot
You don't have to wait for the snap issue to be resolved to keep your receipts in QuickBooks. There are two reliable alternatives:
Option A: Upload from your computer or Google Drive
- Take a photo of the receipt using your phone's native camera app (not the QuickBooks app). The photo will be clear.
- Transfer it to your computer or save it to Google Drive.
- In QuickBooks Online, go to All apps, select Accounting, then choose Receipts.
- Select Upload from computer or Upload from Google Drive and upload your receipt file.
Accepted file formats are PDF, JPEG, JPG, GIF, and PNG. Each file must contain only one receipt.
Option B: Email receipts to QuickBooks
You can also email receipt images directly to QuickBooks - it'll extract the transaction details and create a record for you to review. Set this up by going to Receipts in QuickBooks Online and selecting Forward from email to create your custom email address. See: Email receipts and bills to QuickBooks Online.
After uploading
However you get the receipt into QuickBooks, the next step is the same. Go to the For review tab in Receipts, select the uploaded receipt, and either match it to an existing transaction or fill in the details to create a new one.
For the full upload guide, see: Upload your receipts to QuickBooks Online.
