Question

Balanced a Bank Rec, 31 May 25. On 5 June there is Account TFR from (PAYE) Bank for £16500. Originally marked R, I changed it to C. Why was Opening Balance altered?

Balance reconciled:£5847.00 Beginning Balance -£10653.00 31/5/25 Adjusted entry 5/6/25 £16500. How does an adjustment after the reconciliation Affect the balance c/f?

Your beginning balance changed because QuickBooks calculates it from all transactions currently marked R (reconciled) in the account register. When the £16,500 transfer dated 5 June had its status changed from R to C (cleared), it was removed from the reconciled total. This is why the beginning balance shifted from £5,847 to -£10,653.

Before we confirm the next step, let's open your Reconciliation Report for 31 May and see whether that £16,500 transfer appears.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Reports and search for Reconciliation Reports.
  2. Select the relevant bank account.
  3. Set the period to 31 May 2025, then click to view.

If the transfer does not appear in the 31 May report, it was not part of that reconciliation. Since it's dated 5 June after the May period end, the correct status is C, and it should be reconciled as part of your June statement. When you open the June reconciliation, the beginning balance will show -£10,653. Once you mark the £16,500 transfer as R during the June reconciliation, the balance will resolve correctly.

If the transfer does appear in the 31 May report, it was intentionally reconciled in May and should remain marked R. In that case, changing it to C is what caused the discrepancy, and restoring it to R will correct the beginning balance.

If there's still a discrepancy after you've confirmed the status and completed the June reconciliation, open the Reconcile Discrepancy Report to identify any transactions that were edited, deleted, or had their reconciliation status changed after the 31 May reconciliation was completed. You can also check the Audit Log for any other post-May changes to reconciled transactions.

Let me know what the 31 May Reconciliation Report shows, and we'll go from there.
