Question

Why is QuickBooks Online rejecting my Tax Identification Number (TIN) as invalid when the TIN is correct? Has anyone experienced this and how was it resolved?

Hello there, boniphace-maruchu. It’s definitely a bit of a puzzle when you know your Tax Identification Number is accurate, yet the system keeps flagging it. This usually happens because the system is looking for a very specific character sequence to validate the entry.

I’ll share some info about entering a Tax Identification Number (TIN) in QuickBooks Online. There’s an acceptable format for TIN in QBO, a 9-digit arrangement consisting of 8 numeric + 1 alphanumeric characters. To ensure the system accepts it, try entering it in one of these formats:

  • 12-123456-A
  • 12123456-A
  • 12123456A

After you follow these formats and the issue is still the same, try logging out of your account and then logging back in before attempting to input your TIN again. This often clears out any temporary browser or session glitches.

If the issue is still there, you can contact our live support team to help you figure out what’s causing the problem. Here’s how:

  1. Click the (?) Help icon.
  2. Select the Search tab, then click Contact Us.
  3. Type in your concern (e.g., unable to add TIN or invalid TIN), then click Continue.
  4. Choose between Have us call you or Chat with us.
