I'm trying to categorize credit card expenses but QBO won't let me set the taxes (e.g. 13% HST). Why is the Tax box unavailable and the heading reads Tax*?

Thanks for reaching out here.  Welcome!  QuickBooks Online provides a dynamic sales tax feature to ensure your transactions are aligned with government guidelines.  I'll be happy to provide more information so you're on the right track with your business needs!

When the sales tax feature is set up, QuickBooks will automatically do the calculations on your invoices and receipts to ensure accurate filings.  You can prepare your forms and file your taxes directly from your QuickBooks account.

Based on the information you've provided, you'll need to turn the sales tax feature on.  Here's how:

1. Open Taxes from the left menu and then Sales tax

2. Hit Get started

3. Enter your sales tax information and then Save or Done

For your reference, here's a helpful guide for setting up and using sales tax in QuickBooks Online.  In addition, you can set up where you collect sales tax, add a sales tax category to your products and services and how to add a new sales tax code.  You're ready to continue with categorizing your expenses with the associated sales tax.
