Question

1099-NEC stuck at "accepted"

Hi all,

Why is my 1099-NEC stuck on "accepted" and not "submitted"? I made a correction to the display name, but I did it on Jan 28th. It has been 2 weeks, and I haven't gotten any confirmation that it has been submitted.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

The Accepted status indicates that the IRS has successfully received the 1099-NEC form.

 

Please note that updating the display name does not affect the legal business name registered on the form. This is why no correction filing was initiated automatically.

 

However, if the legal business name was updated in the Tax Info section and a correction was submitted on January 28, the accepted status confirms the IRS received it. The lack of an update after two weeks is unusual, as these are typically processed within 24 to 48 hours.

 

To verify further, please check the status of the contractor's 1099 by following these steps:

 

  1. Navigate to the Expenses and Bills section and select 1099s.
  2. Click the Completed Forms tab.
  3. Locate the accepted 1099 form and check if it displays the corrected business name.

 

Additionally, since you haven't received confirmation of the correction filing, I recommend checking your email's spam or junk folders to ensure no notification has been missed.

Thank you Thomas for your reply! 

I did check the spam email box, and there was nothing there from the IRS.

I am concerned that I have not heard back anything from the IRS since it has been over two weeks. I tried calling them yesterday and after over an hour of being on hold, my call was dropped. 

 

Can I walk you though exactly what I did and maybe you can find the reason it is not getting submitted? I will not use the real name of the contractor.

 

1. I prepared the 1099 by going through the prompts on January 27th, 2026. When I downloaded the completed forms, in the Recipient's name box, it listed his name twice like this :

John Smith

John Smith

 

2. I did a little research and realized that this happened because the Display name was the same as the First Name, Last Name boxes. I tried to delete the display name so as not to have this duplication on the 1099 form, but it wouldn't let me delete the display name (it couldn't be left blank). 

 

3. On Jan 28th, I googled the issue, and the work-around I found was to do a correction to the 1099 and just put a period (.) in the display name box. This created a perfect 1099 with the name "John Smith" just once.

However, after many days of it being "accepted" and not "submitted", I looked for his invoice to see if there was a different company name which there was. It was "John Smith Freelance". So I went into the "Contractor" section, and changed the (.) to "John Smith Freelance". Then I went back to make a second correction on the 1099, but when I changed the (.) to "John Smith Freelance" and hit "next", I got the following message...

 

"You haven’t made any corrections.

Double-check the recipient’s original form, then try correcting it again. If you’re trying to correct your business name or EIN, work directly with the IRS"

 

4. I called Intuit last Friday for help, but after talking with 2 different representatives and sharing my screen for over two hours, she said that there was nothing that she could do on her end to help me and that I would need to call the IRS.  After getting dropped on the call to the IRS yesterday, I thought I'd reach out to the Community for help. I have since gone back into the "Contractor" section and changed the Display name back to "John Smith."

I have a perfect 1099-NEC printed for my contractor. Should I just send this to him or should I wait for this to get resolved by the IRS first before I send it?

QuickBooks Online (QBO) does not support correcting a contractor's name or Tax Identification Number (TIN) on an already-filed 1099-NEC form. The correction workflow in QBO only allows adjustments to amounts. Changes to names or TINs must be submitted manually to the IRS, either via paper filing or through the IRS FIRE system.  

 

To answer your question, the corrected printed 1099-NEC form you have is valid for your contractor to use in their tax filings. You can provide them with the updated form while simultaneously contacting the IRS to formally update the recipient's name for their submission. The contractor can retain the form as-is for their records, even as you proceed with resolving the correction process with the IRS.
