I’m filling out the mileage section when completing trips, it’s showing potential deductions but then not showing in the tax section

In QuickBooks Sole Trader (QBST), mileage records are used solely for tracking and do not automatically appear as expenses in your tax return. The Mileage tab shows logged trips, but a corresponding expense transaction must exist for HMRC's Self Assessment tax summary to reflect the deduction. The Potential deduction is just a preview showing what you could deduct based on the miles logged.

To address this, ensure your trips are tracked and entered correctly in the Mileage section. Then, manually create an expense for your mileage deduction.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to Transactions.
  2. Click New transaction.
  3. Select Expense as your transaction Type.
  4. Fill in the Amount and additional details. Ensure you select the right Category.
  5. Save the transaction.

The mileage expense should now appear under Car, van and travel expenses in your tax summary.

Unexpected behaviors, such as mileage deductions not appearing in the Taxes section, can result from a buildup of cached or outdated data in your browser. To isolate this issue, we can log in to your account in a private window or another browser.
