Is it possible to set up an “auto chase” on invoices when they are overdue for payment and can I create an alert to tell me when invoices are paid

There isn't a function that will alert you when the invoices are paid however there is the status column, that can be included by selecting the small cog to the right of the print and export icons on the customer transaction list, the status will change to viewed if your customer has selected the view and pay option within the invoice. 

We have submitted your feedback to our developers and hopefully they maybe able to implement in the future a more robust system that would enable our customers to be alerted when their customers have made a payment.
