Should I change payments that come up as transfer to expenses. such as when I pay suppliers or purchases on my credit card

Yes, if the transactions are not transfers, change the drop down to expenses to ensure they are recorded correctly - this is just the system attempting to predict the type of transaction based on what you have previously added.
