QuickBooks Online requires every penny in the Debtors account to be tied to a specific customer name. If MoveMyBooks found data that didn't fit this rule, such as unmatched payments or old journals, it parked those balances in an adjustment account. This keeps the books balanced, but QuickBooks doesn't recognize them as true debts, causing your VAT return to skip them.

To figure out how to clear this holding account and make your VAT return accurate, you can run the Transaction Detail by Account report. Here's how:

  1. On the left panel, go to the Reports menu.
  2. Search for the Transaction Detail by Account report in the search bar.
  3. Filter the Report Period.
  4. Click Customise and select Debit and Credit in the columns section.
  5. Select Apply Changes and look for the adjustment amount that MoveMyBooks created.

Once you have identified the necessary adjustments, I recommend consulting your accountant before making any changes.
