Why can't I file my clients VAT Return, my client is enabled for MTD and I have an ASA and my client has authorised me, but still I can't file the Return which is late.

How do I connect to HMRC now

HMRC requires you to re-authorise your connection every 18 months. Even if your client authorised you previously, the background link may have expired, which can disconnect your account from QuickBooks. You can usually resolve this by going to your VAT settings. Make sure you turn on MTD for VAT in QuickBooks, connect to HMRC, and then immediately reconnect to refresh the credentials.

If HMRC detects older, unfiled, or unpaid returns on the client's account, their system will automatically restrict new submissions until the backlog is cleared.

Here's how:

  1. Log in to your HMRC account.
  2. Check for overdue returns or unpaid amounts.
  3. Clear obligations before submitting through QuickBooks.
