CBA and new MFA protocols

Since CBA began multi-factor authentication a few days ago, I receive a request on my smartphone to authorise connection to QBO daily when QBO feeds try and update.

This seems only to be a problem for my connected credit card account, as I do not believe this account was "upgraded". It has been frustrating to get the feed to work, and this happens every day. Every time I receive an error saying to try and update or cannot connect. I then need to connect again through the bank feeds and authorise multiple times.

I do not have the ability within QBO to request the credit card to be upgraded.

I completely understand how that could be time-consuming and frustrating, @apk19. Let me provide some clarity and share the steps you can take to address it.

Please note that only Business and Personal bank accounts are supported by CBA Direct Feeds, which is why there isn’t an option to upgrade your credit card account.

I recommend reaching out to CBA directly to discuss the MFA requirements they’ve implemented for QuickBooks Online bank feeds. They’ll be able to provide further clarification and assist with any account-related updates that might help.

For now, you can choose to manually authorize the daily connection or upload your bank transactions into QuickBooks Online. While this may not be the most convenient option, it will help keep your records accurate and up-to-date until further action by your bank.

For detailed instructions on manually uploading transactions, please refer to this guide: Manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online.

Let us know if you have further questions.

The feed is not updating, error 176. This has happened to all the accounts.

Do you know what this error means?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, BeiloonDB.

Error 176 means that QuickBooks Online (QBO) is unable to sync or update data from your bank servers due to the following reasons:

  • Changes to your Online Banking Login credentials.
  • Bank outages or scheduled maintenance.
  • Updates on your bank website or account information, such as account numbers.

To confirm, log in to your bank's website to check if there are no issues with your credentials, security prompts, or account availability. Verify if their system is functioning accurately and not under maintenance.

If everything is fine on their end, we can manually refresh the connection between your bank and QuickBooks by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Banking menu in QBO.
  2. Select the affected bank or credit card account.
  3. Click the Update button.

If the issue persists, log in to your QuickBooks Online account using a private or incognito window and manually update the connection again. This helps rule out any browser-related issues. You can also switch to another supported browser to see if that resolves the issue.

If none of these steps work, you may consider uploading your transactions manually via a CSV file. For detailed steps, refer to this article: Manually upload your transactions, receipts, and bills into QuickBooks Online.

Does anyone know what has happened to Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) Bank Feeds.  They just won't connect anymore.  They have added a really intrusive and annoying app confirmation process to their Netbank site and now I can't get any feeds from multiple accounts with CBA despite trying repeatedly.

Anyone else having this problem?

December 28, 2025

Hello there, Steve.

I understand how frustrating it can be when bank feeds fail to connect, especially when managing multiple accounts. Let me help you get this resolved.

Before we continue, could you confirm if you are seeing any specific error codes or messages when connecting to your Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) accounts? Sharing this information will help us pinpoint the issue and provide tailored assistance.

Regarding your concern, CBA recently implemented additional security measures, requiring verification each time you refresh the bank transaction page (Bank Feed). These steps are designed to enhance your account's security, but can sometimes disrupt automatic connections.

To prevent repeated disconnections and login prompts, consider upgrading to a direct bank connection. This upgrade provides a more secure and reliable link between your bank account and QBO. You can read more about direct bank connections and their benefits in this article: Direct bank connections with QuickBooks Online.

In the meantime, to ensure your financial records remain updated, you can manually upload your transactions using a CSV file.

About six months ago the bank that was integrated with Quickbooks was acquired by another bank. Since that time transactions from that timeframe (July 25 ) do not load into quickbooks. I need to reconcile the months July 2025 to now acquisition cant.  The link is still good as it reflects a correct bank balance but no transactions.

Hi there, @swimgeysers.

What you're experiencing is a connection break that occurs when a bank linked to QuickBooks Online is acquired by another institution. In this state, the connection appears active because it is still retrieving the ending balance from the previous bank's data. However, the transaction feed fails because it is attempting to pull data from a discontinued account ID or an inactive server.

When banks merge, they often change their Financial Institution Directory (FID) numbers. Your QBO company is likely still recognizing the old bank. It can track the balance because your login credentials remain the same, and the bank is no longer pushing transaction data through that specific connection.

To get around this and proceed with the reconciliation, you'll need to manually upload the needed transactions into your company file. Here's how:

  1. Log in to your new bank’s website.
  2. Download your transaction history from July 25, 2025, to the current date.
  3. Choose the .QBO format when acquiring transactions. You can also use .CSV if other options are not available.

Once done, proceed to upload your transactions. Refer to this article for more details: Manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online.

If you encounter duplicate transactions, you can exclude them to ensure you can categorize and match the remaining entries within the program seamlessly. Feel free to check this page: How to remove duplicate bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

After that, you can proceed with the reconciliation to keep your books accurate. You must also reset the bank connection to establish a new data exchange, allowing QuickBooks to resume downloading transactions from your upgraded financial institution.

Also I am trying to upload older transactions that were never downloaded the usual way

January 28, 2026

Why are my downloaded transactions not finding the correct account to use. I am trying to update AMEX, but every time I download it won't pull up the AMEX account in my chart of accounts. This is QuickBooks DESKTOP. Enterprise

Hi there, @Foamroof. Let's take a closer look at your company file using the Verify and Rebuild Data tool to troubleshoot bank-related concerns.

Please know that QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) is not available in Australia. However, if you reside in the United States or Canada and have purchased the product there, I’d like to ask if you’re using Web Connect to import your downloaded transactions into QuickBooks?

If that's the case, and your American Express (AMEX) account isn't pulling up during the import process, please ensure that your QBDT is running to its latest release. New updates often include fixes and improvements.

On top of that, let's use the Verify and Rebuild Data tool to resolve company-related data issues. Before starting, create a backup copy of your company's file to protect your data.

  1. Proceed to the Window tab, then Close All.
  2. Click on File and select Utilities.
  3. Choose Verify Data. Hit OK.

After that, follow these steps to rebuild your company data:

  1. Go to the File menu, then choose Utilities.
  2. Select Rebuild Data, then OK.
  3. Save your backup, and OK.
  4. When the Rebuild has completed message appears, click OK.

If the issue continues, let's close QuickBooks and download QuickBooks Tool Hub. I recommend using Windows 11 (64-bit) and downloading the most recent version (1.6.0.8) of the tool.

Disclaimer: The hyperlink provided is specific to the US version; however, the same process applies to Canada.

My checking account got unconnected and I finally got it reconnected but I am missing almost 2 months of transactions. How can I get this issue resolved?

QuickBooks Team
January 30, 2026

It's great to hear that your checking account is reconnected, Candhhaulingllc22.

To resolve the issue with missing transactions, I recommend logging into your bank's online banking portal. Sometimes, transactions take a while to sync. Please remember that QuickBooks Online (QBO) relies on the banking data provided by your checking account. This means any discrepancies or missing transactions may arise from the information shared between them.

You can also click the Update button to refresh your bank connection and sync any missing transactions into your QuickBooks account. Here's what you need to do:

  1. In the left menu, go to All apps.
  2. Choose Accounting, then Bank transactions.
  3. Select Update .
  4. After that, find your transactions in the For Review section.

If they're still not showing after updating, you can manually upload them. Check your financial institution’s website to learn how to obtain a record of your transactions. Ensure the record or account statement starts at least one day before your oldest QuickBooks transaction in that account.

Once the file is ready, you can refer to this article for detailed steps on importing your transactions: Manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online.

Our QBOL is feeding two different accounts into one on QBOL. Account numbers

Midfirst [Removed by moderator] - personal Checking & Midfirst [Removed by moderator] - business checking

The account should be Midfirst [Removed by moderator] - Personal Savings

Because of this we are unable to reconcile our year end books for taxes and need a speedy solution.

Kind Regards

Kristy

Thanks for joining this thread, ibhookd.

You've come to the right place for assistance with all things QuickBooks. I'm happy to help resolve the issue with your bank accounts in QuickBooks Online.

To fix QuickBooks Online (QBO) feeding two bank accounts into one, it's recommended to disconnect the incorrectly mapped account in the Banking tab, create a new, separate register, and reclassify the mixed transactions. Then, use the "Merge Accounts" feature to move the misallocated data to the correct register, or use "Undo Reconciliation" to fix historical errors. Here are the steps to get this done:

  • Stop Future Duplicates: Go to Banking, select the account, click the pencil icon (Edit), then select Edit account info. Uncheck the "Connected" box to stop the feed.
  • Identify and Move Transactions: Go to Transactions > Bank Transactions and use the "Excluded" or "For Review" tabs to delete or reassign transactions that belonged to the wrong account.
  • Merge Accounts (If necessary): If two different bank accounts are linked to the same register, create a new, correct bank account in the Chart of Accounts. Rename the incorrect account to match the name of the correct one exactly (including punctuation). QBO will prompt you to merge them, which will transfer all transactions.
  • Reconcile Year-End: If you cannot reconcile, you may need to Undo a Previous Reconciliation if transactions were cleared improperly. Go to the Banking > Reconcile menu, choose the account, and select "Undo" on the history screen.

The following article provides additional info about merging duplicate accounts. I recommend reaching out to your accountant to verify the steps mentioned above will suit your business setup. Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you have any other questions. Take care!

My bank account was somehow disconnected. When I reconnected it, now I have a duplicate account with a - 2 at the end. I tried to rename the new account to match the first account. I got a message asking if I wanted to merge the accounts, and I clicked yes. But then I got another message stating that I can’t merge two accounts that are both setup for Online Banking or Web Connect.

Welcome to the Community, Mbranson.

I want to make sure you're able to merge your duplicate bank accounts in QuickBooks Online.

It sounds like you're on the right track. All you'll need to do is temporarily disconnect the accounts, merge them, then you can reconnect the merged account to Web Connect. I'll break this down for you:

  1. Disconnect Bank Feeds: Go to Transactions > Bank transactions (or Banking). Select the account, click the pencil icon, select Edit account info, check Disconnect this account on save, and click Save and Close for both accounts.
  2. Reconcile Transactions: Ensure all transactions are categorized and reconciled in both accounts to prevent data loss.
  3. Prepare Accounts: Navigate to the Gear icon and select Chart of Accounts.
  4. Rename Duplicate Account: Find the account you want to remove, click the dropdown arrow, select Edit, and change its name to match the account you want to keep exactly.
  5. Merge: Click Save. A prompt will appear asking to confirm; select Yes, merge accounts.
  6. Reconnect: Once merged, reconnect the main account to the bank feed.

You can find additional details here: Merge duplicate accounts. Assistance is only a comment or post away if you have any other questions.

When I click the Sync button, I get an error message stating I need to register my Quickbooks. How do I do this?

Welcome to the Community, @jtampien. A registration error often means your Intuit account needs a refresh or multi-factor authentication.

Can you share the exact error message with us? Is this happening with one specific bank or all banks you're trying to update the connection for? A screenshot of the error would help us identify if it's a subscription, feature access, or bank connection issue.

To fix this, look for a banner on the Banking page, select the Check connections link, and follow the steps provided.

In the meantime, please verify that your subscription is Active by visiting the Subscriptions and billing page.

Hi there. For you to receive payment from your customers,  you'll need to add your bank account through the Payment settings.

This allows QuickBooks to verify your account and enable the Pay now feature for your customers. You can add it by going to the Gear icon and selecting the Payments tab.

Then, you'll add the bank account under the Deposit accounts section.
