Question

QuickBooks should give us the ability to create new 'detail type' in our COA. Even if they limit us. I have to create sub accounts when they should stand on their own.

Hi Lisa,

While the ability to create new 'detail type' in your Chart of Accounts (COA) in QuickBooks can greatly help your workflow, detail types don't impact the actual accounting portion of your books.

Detail types are pre-set by Intuit to provide a standardized list for accounting and tax purposes. Also, detail types can help you understand what types of transactions are tracked by each account type.

If you need to track transactions by departments, product lines, or other meaningful segments, you can consider using the Classes feature, which is only available in QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced.

You can also relay your suggestions directly to Intuit to support the product’s ongoing development. Here's how:

1. From the Chart of accounts page, select the Feedback option.

2. Provide a brief description of your suggestion.

3. Click Next to submit.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
