Question

Is QuickBooks Self Employed going to be compatible with the UK's "Making Tax Digital" system? i.e. will I be able to submit quarterly updates and tax returns directly?

I won't need to do it before 2027 but would be good to know whether I'll need to upgrade to the other QuickBooks service

Thank you for reaching out about the compatibility between QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) and Making Tax Digital (MTD), dom16.

At the moment, we're unable to provide specific details regarding any future improvements or updates to QuickBooks Self Employed (QBSE) that would enable compatibility with the UK’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) system for Income Tax Self Assessment. Currently, QBSE doesn't support submitting quarterly updates or tax returns directly to HMRC under MTD requirements.

Since MTD will apply to you starting in 2027, there’s no immediate action required. However, to comply from that point onward, it's advisable to upgrade to an MTD-compliant QuickBooks product, such as QuickBooks Online, which supports direct submissions to HMRC.

I'm also including these articles on managing your Self Assessment taxes, common expenses you can claim, and a handy checklist to keep track of your tax return in QBSE:
