Yes, you're right. If your QBO subscription is still in the trial version, you're unable to upgrade your account. You'll need to wait for the trial to expire, then pay the regular amount.
To do that:
Sign in as a primary admin in your QBO account.
Go to the Gear icon and select Subscriptions and Billing.
In the QuickBooks Online section, click Upgrade your plan.
Select Choose Plan and follow the onscreen steps to continue.
