Question

If Bank Rules are publishing a transfer as a credit card credit, please guide me to fixing this

The Bank rule created asks for the payment of the credit card to be a transfer between accounts. But in error, I find these are considered as a Credit card credit, which it is not.

To fix issues where bank rules are incorrectly categorizing credit card payments as credit card credits in QuickBooks Online (QBO), you’ll need to adjust the rule’s transaction type.

Here are the steps to update:

  1. Go to All apps in the left navigation menu, then select Accounting.
  2. Click on the Rules tab.
  3. Locate the rule that is causing the issue and select Edit on the right side.
  4. In the rule setup window, look for the Transaction type dropdown in the "Then assign" section.
  5. Change the transaction type from Credit card credit to Transfer.
  6. Ensure the correct bank account is selected in the Transfer from or Transfer to field.
  7. Click Save.

To correct any transactions that have already been recorded incorrectly, you can easily re-categorize them:

  1. Go back to the Bank transactions page.
  2. Select the Posted tab for the credit card account.
  3. Find the transactions that were recorded as a credit card credit in error.
  4. Select Undo in the action column. This moves the transactions back to the Pending tab.
  5. Once they are back in the Pending tab, your newly updated rule should automatically recognize them as transfers, allowing you to add them correctly.

For more information about this process, please check out this article: Record your payments to credit cards in QuickBooks Online.

Updating your bank rule to the correct transaction type and reprocessing any previously categorized entries will ensure your credit card payments are recorded accurately as transfers in QBO.

I get that your clients have specific needs when it comes to organizing their transactions. Know that selecting Deposit as the Transaction Type in your bank rule causes the system to process credit card payments as Credit Card Credit. To fix this, change it to Transfer.

However, if you've already tried this and it's still not working, I recommend starting fresh by deleting and recreating the rule to clear any underlying configuration issues. If the problem persists even after doing so, it is best to reach out to our Intuit Live Expert team. They have advanced tools to look deeper into your account and see exactly what's happening.
