What does bank error 108 mean, and what do I do if my bank says there's no issue?

It's understandably confusing when your bank can't find anything wrong on their end. Error 108 isn't really about an account problem, it means QuickBooks detected a specific message sitting on your bank or credit card's website, usually something like new terms of service, a maintenance announcement, or a new offer, that's blocking the connection.

Check your bank's website directly

  1. Sign in to your bank or credit card's website using the same credentials you use to connect the account to QuickBooks.
  2. Look for any messages or required actions.

If your bank recently merged with another bank, get your new sign-in info first. Then in QuickBooks, disconnect the account and reconnect it using the correct credentials for your bank's website.

Update your bank connection in QuickBooks

In QuickBooks Online:

  1. Go to Accounting, then Bank transactions.
  2. Select Update.

In QuickBooks Self-Employed:

  1. Select the profile icon, then Bank accounts.
  2. Select Refresh all.

If your bank says everything looks fine

If you didn't find any notification on your bank's website and the error is still showing, it's worth going back to your bank to ask them to check for messages that might not be surfacing on the main account page, since these are sometimes tucked into a specific section rather than shown upfront. If the error persists after that, try signing in to QuickBooks through an incognito or private browser window.

Try opening your QBO account on any private/incognito browser.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, @u1739176642. Let's work together to resolve bank error 108 in QuickBooks Online (QBO), so we can get back to downloading transactions seamlessly.

If we see error 108 when checking online banking, it merely indicates that your bank or credit card has posted a notice to their website. Messages, particularly those relating to updates, may prevent QBO from connecting. Since you've already reached out to your bank and confirmed there's no ongoing maintenance on their end, let's perform other troubleshooting options so we can download your latest bank transactions.

Before that, may I ask what specific bank account is affected? This way, we can update you if there's an in-progress investigation regarding your financial institution and provide you with workarounds, if there are any.

First, let's update your bank connections in QBO. Here's how:

  1. From the Accountant view, go to Banking.
  2. Select the Banking tab.
  3. Click Update.

If the issue persists, I'd suggest manually importing transactions into QBO. Before doing so, let's open and review the file from your bank to ensure it's in the correct format

Furthermore, it's recommended to reconcile your accounts monthly in QBO to ensure they match your bank statements. By doing so, we can guarantee that your books are balanced and accurate.

Please don't hesitate to get back to us if you have clarifications fixing bank error 108. The Community is available 24/7 to assist you. Keep safe, and have a great day ahead!
