Why does QuickBooks Checking show error 9999, and how do I fix it?

I've had an issue starting 6/11/24 where my Quickbooks Checking account won't update with error code 9999. I've tried a private browsing window with the same result. There is no way to disconnect and reconnect a QB Checking account, so there's no option there. Anyone else having this issue?

As these are both Intuit products I'd expect it to work more reliably than an external bank.

Sorry, we can't update your account. Please wait a few hours and try updating again (9999).

Error 9999 means QuickBooks Online lost its connection to your bank for a moment. Most of the time, a manual update clears it right up. If it doesn't, a few more checks will usually get things updating again.

Here's what to try, in order:

  1. Do a manual update. Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions. Select Update. If that doesn't pull in your transactions, sign in through a private or incognito browser window and update again. That rules out browser extensions and cached sign-ins. Note that transactions older than 90 days can't be downloaded this way, so you'll need to add those manually.
  2. Check your bank's website. If downloads seem slow or stuck, the issue may be on the bank's end. Sign in directly to your bank's website (not through QuickBooks) and look for any posted outage or maintenance notice, account alerts, or new security requirements. Bank-side outages usually resolve within 24 to 48 hours. Once everything looks clear there, go back to QuickBooks and select Update again.
  3. Update your bank info in QuickBooks if anything changed. If you've updated your account number, username, or password on your bank's website, go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions, select the account card, then Edit, then Edit sign in info. Enter your updated bank details and select Save and connect.

Anecdotal, but I just received a message about a new debit card being mailed to me, so I wonder if that's part of this.
