A 105 error means QuickBooks Online can't reach your bank's server to sync your account. It usually clears up once your bank finishes updating its systems on their end, but there are a few things you can try right away to speed things along.
Step 1: Update your bank connection
- Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions.
- Select Update.
Your bank may need up to 24 hours or more to sort out its own connection issues, so if the error pops right back up, that's expected. It's worth trying again the next day before moving on to the next steps.
Step 2: Check your bank's site directly
- Sign in to Merrill Lynch's website in a separate tab.
- Look for any alerts, notifications, or maintenance messages that might explain the outage.
- Confirm you can see your account history and recent transactions there.
If you can sign in fine but QuickBooks still won't connect, try loading QuickBooks in an incognito or private browser window. This rules out a browser or cache issue on your end.
Keep your books moving while you wait
If the connection is down for a stretch and you need current transactions in your books now, you don't have to wait on the bank feed. You can upload your Merrill Lynch transactions manually:
- Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions.
- Select the tile for the account, then the Link account dropdown, then Upload from file.
- Upload a CSV file, a Quicken (QFX) file, or an account statement (PDF or image) from your bank.
- Match the columns to the right fields, choose the transactions to bring in, and select Continue, then Done.
One thing worth planning for: once the direct connection comes back, QuickBooks may try to download the same transactions again, which can create duplicates. When that happens, find the duplicate in your For review tab and select Exclude rather than deleting it.
Excluding tells QuickBooks the transaction is already accounted for, so it won't try to bring it in again. Deleting it instead just means the bank feed pulls it right back in.
Once your transactions are all in, whether from the feed or an upload, take a few minutes to categorize and reconcile them. That keeps your account matched up with your actual bank statement and makes it easy to catch anything that looks off.
