I was using QuickBooks 2020. I have a current backup of the file (.qbb) on a thumbdrive. How do I use that file to import my company to the online version?

You cannot directly import a QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) backup file into QuickBooks Online (QBO). The data must first be restored in QuickBooks Desktop before transferring it to QBO, @hmhood74.

You can use the trial version of QuickBooks Desktop without needing any codes. However, it's essential not to attempt to register it, as this may lock you out of the software. After installation, you can restore your backup file and proceed to transfer it to QuickBooks Online.

You can check this article about downloading a free trial version: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how to restore your backup file:

  1. In QBDT, go to the File menu, then select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy, then click Next.
  3. Choose Local Backup and then Next.
  4. Browse the .qbb file, then click Open.

Once done, follow the steps in this article to migrate your data from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.
