Can not accept employee social security number

You only need to change the employee's status to Active. There's no need to enter a Social Security Number since QuickBooks had that information already when you created the employee's profile. However, if you haven't entered the SSN before, use this format: XXX-XX-XXXX. What was the QuickBooks error when you tried changing the status?
